Do you want to go on a trip without paying the price of an arm (and a leg)? Do you like manual labor, or are you just curious to try something new? Why not try WWOOFing?

What is WWOOFing? Literally: Workers Working On Organic Farms. One way to stay / eat in exchange of a few hours of work a day, on an organic farm. Created in England in 1971, the concept has spread to the whole world, even in Quebec, to become a very popular activity, especially in warm places like Hawaii!

What to know about WWOOFing:

1- No need to be particularly full of muscles or infinitely manually talented to try WWOOF.

You'll learn very quickly that the tasks on a farm are extremely varied. From the kitchen to "go ahead, throw this tree as far as you can" (I experienced it), you will have many opportunities to find out what jobs are right for you and you may even discover a talent or two! And don't worry about the muscles, that’s something you will develop ...;)

2- Take the time to choose your farm.

No one is immune to an employer a little greedy in time and labor. Choose also a farm where you will have the opportunity to learn a few tricks and why you are doing this or that work. The context of education that comes with WWOOF is an enjoyable way to learn. In return, remember that you represent a "cheap labor" for people who often do not have the means to afford paid staff. And remember also that a roof and some food are not worth spending the afternoon breaking rocks in the sun!

3- Learn to communicate.

The task does not suit you? Not sure if you understand what work is required? Ask questions! Better ask than undergo the reprimands ... and this will allow you to leave the farm with a whole lot of new friends!

4- Enjoy!

WWOOFing is a wonderful opportunity to push your limits and learn more about the culture you are visiting. Be open, try, smile. Life is better when you keep an open mind!

And who knows, maybe this will make you want to have your own little garden here ...?
